We need a digital archive of LGBTQ+ works of art, science, and every other conceivable work we can share between each other because we are beyond the genocide warning level in most countries in the west and they’re already trying to purge us from libraries.
If other people are interested I’ll make this a priority
Speaking as someone with a background in archives, stuff like this does already exist. No need to reinvent the wheel. Creating an archive and making sure it’s accessible and searchable and actually preserves things for the long time (especially digital things) is actually a huge undertaking. Show some love to these already existing collections and maybe even consider contributing. There’s the Digital Transgender Archive off the top of my head. I know more I just have to think.
The History Project, based in Boston, is an LGBTQ+ community archive that’s existed for decades. Many of their collections are digitized.
The Lesbian Herstory Archives, based in Brooklyn, is similar.
The Digital Public Library of America covers a great many topics, but they also have LGBTQ+ stuff.
I’d also recommend searching “lgbtq+” and “libguide” in your preferred search engine. Many universities list helpful resources and databases, some of which are freely accessible.
Many public and academic libraries in the US and Canada (not sure where you’re writing from) subscribe to the Gale Archives of Sexuality and Gender. If you have a library card or are a student at a given library, you can access it for free.
In general, I’d really recommend searching around to see how you can support existing museums, community archives, college and university archives, etc that specialize in LGBTQ+ history and media local to you, whether that’s in your same town or regionally.
You are not alone! People are working on this and some of them have institutional budgets!
But also kind of looping back to the first post: you personally might have relevant records. Photos of Pride or protests you’ve been to, journals, a blog full of trans headcanons even. That’s all part of queer history and that’s the stuff these archives and museums are made of.
Label your stuff carefully, make backup copies, and get to know your local organizations!
We’re also working on building an open access archive and actively looking for content contributions! https://about.jstor.org/revealdigital/hiv-aids-the-arts/
this is absolutely fucking pathetic now every single fucking streaming service is gonna start doing this shit. all y'all had to do was not watch Netflix and let it flop for a few months and they would have given up
Hey just as a heads up, the company who did this monitoring, Antenna, has ONLY been monitoring Netflix for four years, which means they’re not including any data from the start of, or the peak of Netflix. (Plus this data is a blog post, not an actual research article.)
Additionally, the article that it looks like every single one of the posts is referencing is only drawing attention to four days in May, most notably being May 26 and 27. Realistically, it’s only a couple hundred thousand new subscribers, which frankly pales in comparison to the millions of subscribers that Netflix currently has and currently stands to lose.
Plus, the article ends with a plug for Antenna’s services.
https://www.antenna.live/post/a-first-look-at-the-impact-of-netflixs-password-sharing-crackdown
I’m not a professional or anything, but here’s the link to the actual blog post if anyone wants to take a look. I think media outlets are being intentionally misleading about the scope of this to try and make it look like Netflix succeeded, but I haven’t seen anyone in the tags talk about this.
That still is a lot and then it’s this misinformation that’s going to get other companies to think they should do it too. Again what happened to helping show runners and the WGA out?
I looked at different fact checking sites to evaluate this journal and there is nothing on it.
The only way to access this website is by typing in “Antenna Methodology” otherwise typing in “antenna” or “antenna journalism” will only talk about physical antennas.
It’s sketchy that you can’t look it up easily as I had to go to the link provided by the user above and click the link at the end to figure out to type in “Antenna Methodology”. Even when you type in “Antenna Methodology” or “Antenna.live” these websites give nothing.
Everything gives you an irrelevant result (which is the most common result) or a “no results found” message (as seen below):
What’s even sketchier is the fact that they want you to pay for the data they have instead of releasing it to the public (this is much different than the no fly list that got leaked because these statistics shouldn’t contain people’s personal information).
It made a bit more sense when I went to the writer for this article’s (Brendan Brady) LinkedIn and saw he posted this:
A startup is “a company that’s in the initial stages of business.” This is why I could not find any information on it.
As for the people who Tweeted this (PopBase), they aren’t really professional. This was their response to someone mimicking them:
Calling a mimicker “attention-deprived” and getting mad at 10k people for being deceived by a copycat isn’t quite professional. Think: would a professional news outlet (MSNBC, CNN, BBC) respond like this?
This feels more like a tabloid. Buzzfeed feels more professional than them.
In conclusion, this Tweet was made by a tabloid-like account who is less professional than Buzzfeed featuring undisclosed “statistics and research” you need to pay for to see and incomplete information from a startup company trying to promote themselves at the end of their article.
As @hawthornvisual put it:
Please stay safe out there and use media literacy to prevent misinformation like this from spreading and getting out of control! Stay safe, everyone 🩵
white people please just purchase native artwork and jewelry from native people i keep seeing idiot white people be like “waaah i wish i could support native creators but its cultural appropriation” girl why would beaders sell you their earrings then. just dont get a medicine wheel or a thunderbird then like damn it is that easy
If Native folks are making it to sell to white people with the approval of their tribe, it’s not “appropriation”–its support and appreciation! So yes, buy that native-made dream catcher, but not the mass produced fakes made by white people. Like, you can go to a pow wow and buy native crafts there, too.
here are some places to get native/indigenous goods and merch online if you can’t find something local or if physical access is an obstacle:

The primary source of these statistics is one (1) market research blog that only has data for 2019-present. These numbers are not from Netflix itself
